For Art's Sake

Part of an article in the SD Reader:

Artists in the South Bay are facing extinction. Schools have eliminated art classes. There are no galleries or art events taking place. Yet, there is a thriving community of artists that call the South Bay home. They are young and old and produce art that is full of life — but have nowhere to show it!

Recently, an organization named Trinidy Incorporated offered to clean up the building at 3525 Main Street — which has been vacant for over eight years — in exchange for two years' use of the property. Trinidy would like to house a multi-service community center at the location. Services offered would include a community arts center, a teen-fathers program, and headquarters for a mobile health clinics network.

Do You Have Something You Would like to Sell?

Winners Within Us, Inc. publishes an eZine (http://winnerswithinus.com/).  Their main focus is the positive things that people do within their communities and beyond.

The eZine has an online Market Place (http://marketplace.winnerswithinus.com/) that host a variety of products. Though art is the most plentiful product offered, it is very limited - mostly sea scape paintings and some clocks.

I suggest that all the serious artists in our groups look into the offer being made by Alex Scandalios, the
eZine's CEO/Publisher.

This is what Alex Scandalios says:
"We Are an Online Magazine with a Shopping Mall Called Winners Marketplace™. I Am Looking for a Supplier of a Line of Arts/Crafts Who Would Be Able to Ship Their Orders to Our Readers. We Will Provide You a Storefront in Our Marketplace, Do All the Work, Make the Sales and Process the Orders. We Would Then Send the Orders to You along with the Money for the Sale and You Would Ship the Product to the Customer. The Customers Would Be Yours to Service and Take Care of. We Would Simply Be Your Landlord of the "Virtual Store" Where the Sale Takes Place. You Can See What I'm Talking about at Our Website.  You Only Pay Us a When We Produce Results. We Only Charge a 10% Commission. If You're Interested You Can Contact Us from the Website."

Serious About Your Art?

Seriously consider entering the International Portrait Competition. It's $40 for 3 samples of your work - there is a catch: you must register for the conference if you are selected as a finalists (only 15 finalists will be selected) the fee for the conference is $395 for members/$455 for non-members and all finalists must bring their original work to win a top prize. Plus you have to pay for your hotel and food. The good thing is that you get to attend workshops offered by the worlds best portraits artists.

We may be able to do fund raisers to help finance one (or more of us) to go to conference if selected as finalists - this has to be looked into.

Here is the entry form: http://portraitsociety.org/conference/pdfs/competitionentry.pdf

All work has to be somewhat Realistic and done independently, e.g. not in a classroom or under the direction of an instructor. You must never have won an award in any previous competition (it is not specific if it means one of their comps or any comp).

The best part of the competition is that work can be 2D and 3D (sculpture). Check out the website of past winners: http://portraitsociety.org/conferencespast/2009/winners.htm
